Why is lithium prescribed if a person doesn't have any symphons off bipolar disorder?

Lithium stabilizes mood, and may be used if a person has a history of mood swings, even if it doesn't include mania. It is successful in treating depression, especially if a person has not responded to treatment by the more standard antidepressants.

Lithium is also sometimes used in combination with an antipsychotic medication for persons with schizophrenia that has a mood disturbance along with it (sometimes referred to as schizoaffective disorder).
