Have you ever thought your child or nephew / niece or grandchild may be a candidate for bipolar disorder?

Perhaps you have noticed the child (ages ranging from 2 - 5) acting a bit differently than other kids that age, hyper active, defiant, highly intelligent, extremely needy, acts out only with people, uncontrollable tantrums/ meltdowns, requires specific routines (example: needs a seat belt extremely tight, or a meltdown can occur). Very irritable perhaps towards siblings, irritable in general. Have you noticed this behavior? Perhaps the child could be a candidate?

I have a child that has been diagnosised with early onset bipolar. Many people think it is impossible to diagnosis and it is hard but he was always different with almost every syptom you listed and has had to be treated inpatient. It has been a long and difficult road requing many appts evaluations medication trials and hospitalizations these are not thing I have done because I have a spoiled undisiplined child this is real and we deal with it everyday. If I may recommend a few things:
The book The Bipolar Child and the book The Explosive Child

Only a qualified medical practitioner should be diagnosing people with "bi-polar" disorder.

If you think you might have spotted some of the symptoms in a relative, this could be indicative that maybe it's YOU who needs to be checked up on. Delusions of medical qualification is a far more serious and dangerous condition than children being children.
In 1977 my Son was born and as he grew up he was always very extremely hyper, doctors told me it was hyper-activity and he would out-grow it...B.S ! He never did and by the age of 17 they told me he was bi-polar, but i was a single parent and could not afford the medications and not even the state recognized it as a neccessary med. He was very abusive towards his 2 sisters and some times with me, my Son is 6'3'' and 310 lbs, what could I do...not a Damn thing, guess where he is now...doing 30 years in prison, and he didnt even kill anyone. All drug-related stuff, I couldnt control him and the state wouldnt help. It is a serious disease if anyone has a child and is suspect of BI-POLAR....PLEASE SEEK HELP AND DONT STOP TRYING. I miss my Son so very much, I visit him when I can he is a 8 1/2 hr drive away from me. I wish I wouldve known what I know now back then I would've worked harder to seek treatment for him, my Son is now 28 yrs old and he has done 4 years of his sentence, he is doing good ...i am not, when you have only ONE Son, ..well... i miss him dearly.
I was a bipolar child, most doctors are reluctant to diagnose this in children and I suffered for years. Some other illness's can possibly mimic bipolar disorder, it could be any number of things from Add, Adhd, epilepsy , or even aspergers, etc. I was diagnosed with a lot of different disorders and had a variety of treatments. I would reccomend you get a decent health workup for the child and not self-diagnose. Even then be prepared for a few different opinions.
