Can you give me advise on how to support/cope with my sister who has bipolar disorder?

My sister, who is 15, was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It has been difficult to me because I am the one that my parents, who are on the elderly side, call on for help. I just need some advise to re-energize. In her high moods she can find many things she wants to do...Won't listen...She is under medication (lithium).

Its definitely difficult to deal with someone with bipolar disorder especially when it is family. My advice to you is, take some time and clear your head and think positive. If she does something that she shouldn't of done, just remember to tell yourself that it is the disorder and not her.
I don't know that lithium is the right medication for bipolar. That can make a person have even more mood swings, etc. Plus I don't know that at the age of 15 a person can be diagnosed as bipolar. There may be another diagnosis more suitable for a person that young. You may need to take her for other mental therapy more appropriate for a person that age because lithium is a very potent medication. It could very well be that she is going through hormonal changes at that age and it really isn't a mental issue. At 15 think about all that is going on in her system because of becoming a women. I would suggest taking her to a good gyne doc and having some tests done to see if it isn't hormonal before you let her still keep under lithium. Exactly (under) lithium.
Best things one of my sisters did for me when i was behaving very erratically (due to bipolar) was to throw humour on to the situation, dark humour and be very, VERY blunt. if shes being outrageous tell her- how tactfully you need to depends on the person, it may not get through to her at the time but it should sink in if you repeatedly tell her- these two methods were the only way to get through to me and sometimes even they didnt work- dont beat yourself up if you cant get through to her, it can be very, very difficult. take time out when you need it... the humour bit can help recharge your batteries too.
in depressed states youve got to be a little more careful, being there, little presents that show you care (often at these times people with bipolar need material evidence)...
my sister and i lived a few hundred km away from eachother so it wasnt so straining on her but she still put a lot of effort in and continues to, it means alot to me.
best of luck
Yes I am Bipolar and my name is Mike! I also have Social Anxiety Disorder and Diabetes too but my best advice to you with all my years of experience suffering and having fun so yeah be VERY PATIENT WITH HER BUD@ We have "Hypersensitivity" bud! Be nice and listen to what she says and take it seriously and make sure that she is eating and taking her meds! But Patience with ME is the biggest part bud! There will be days when she wont want to get out of bed for 2 days and not shower for a week trust me bud it is crippling and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy bud! I was dead too, and brought back from a suicide attempt so "Patience" is key! Be laid back and open up your power of listening and understanding and you will be able to laugh at our mania sometimes and it doesnt even offend us BP's bud!! I am in two support groups too and mine is http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/edg...

Just in case anyone is intersted in Self Harm info or Bipolar or Anxiety or Depression, we talk about everything and it is totally FREE totally Yahoo Health Groups and totally PRIVATE no showing up on the internet searches and such! So if anyone would need support I am among the best in the business bud as I am a VET and my HONOR IS MY LOYALTY; Oh and us BP's are creative little buggers too buds!! Take Care and thanks! Hope I helped,,, MIKEY/PUGS/PA
