Mood disorder, bipolar?

My husband and I have trying to figure out what has been going on with him....we think he may be bipolar... He is seeing a doctor now, but I have concerns with his anger fits. He goes from Doctor Jeckel to Mr. Hyde in a matter of seconds. He becomes verbally abusive, angry, unreasonable, he yells, wants to start fights....and overall I don't know how else to describe it but not himself. Then as quickly as it started....he calms down for about ten minutes and he's back to himself? Is this normal for bipolar?....is this what the books are talking about when they say manic? Has anyone else come across this sort of dramatic mood swing? He's tried Adderal, Cymbalta, the new drug Abilify and a few others at various doses... and seeing a therapist....but he's still not even....any advice froma similar experience would be appreciated.
Thanks

Anger can be part of bipolar, but your husband does not sound bipolar. Borderline Personality Disorder is a possibility, but that's best left to a doctor to diagnose, not random strangers on the 'net.
Bipolar is characterised by episodes of severe clinical depression and mania or hypomania (for definitions of those, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/current_dia... ). The extreme end of mania often turns into psychosis, complete with hallucinations and delusions. During manic phases, the person's judgement and perception of reality is severely compromised, leading to risky actions with potentially damaging consequences (financially, sexually and relationship-wise). Untreated, episodes generally worsen over time due to an effect known as kindling. Untreated Bipolar sufferers are at a very high risk of suicide: 20-25% attempt it, and 15% succeed.

The cycles in bipolar disorder are much longer than people generally believe. Anyone whose mood changes from minute to minute is very unlikely to be bipolar. Bipolar 1 is characterised by mood episodes lasting many months, while Bipolar 2 has episodes in the region of weeks to months. Rapid and ultra-rapid cycling bipolar disorder is rare, and cycles last days to weeks.

There are many drugs available to treat the symptoms of bipolar (there is no cure). These are either anti-convulsants or anti-psychotics (personally I take both), and the most well known of these is Lithium. Most patients will go through a number of different drugs before finding one that works for them.

Overall, I'd say that this isn't your husband from what you've described.
Bipolar can go from extremely high to very depressed-he may have a chemical imbalance
I am bipolar and sometimes I do have raging fits of anger. Usually I am depressed at the time and I am then easily triggered. Any small thing can set me off. Manic means the up times for a bipolar, when we are the most happy. He may not be bipolar though. He may just have an anger problem.
Just an FYI, men usually get schizophrenia
and women get by polar (or manic depressive) I only know this cause my mother in law is manic depressive and when i first found this out i researched it and make an appointment to talk to my doctor about it cause i wanted to understand what she had and what she night be going through when she gets her spells....(especially because if we ever had a baby)
but it all depends on his age.... cause that stuff usually come out in the mid 20's so if hes in his 30;s he should be in the clear...
Is he depressed at all ? Cause it could be something as simple as a bit of depression.... or maybe he has split personalities???
But it kind of sounds like my husband... and he just has an anger problem... but anger management helps that. Is there any of this stuff in his family history?
i hope i helped :)
I have all the same symptoms as your husband one minute i'm a wonderful person and the next i'm a raging biatch from heck!! Honestly the only thing that keeps me stable is the new meds i am on which are lamictal that is a mood stabilizer 100 milligrams of that, zoloft also 100 milligrams, and klonopin 1 milligram w/out these meds i can't function like a normal human being
it is hard to tell based on your description because of the lack of details, but that sounds more like borderline than bipolar....http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/bpd.cfm...
This link shows that explosive behaviors are more consistent with a disorder such as borderline, as opposed to bipolar, where symptoms of mania will last for several days before symptoms of depression sets in.

Bipolar is most often alternating episodes of mania and depression, with each episode lasting most of the day, every day for 1 week (mania) and 2 weeks (depression).Usually you'll feel normal between episodes

The links I have given you will also describe symptoms of mania and depression.

Good luck!
