If someone was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder at one point but then forced to come off all their medications?

and been off of them for 4 years and never had another mixed, manic, or hypomanic episode, was the original diagnosis most likely wrong? I don't think they would have been able to function for 4 years without meds if they were truly bipolar.

they have no symptoms, they've been professionally evaluated.

Medications treat symptoms. The medications should not be needed anymore if symptoms are not manifesting or causing problems.

Other medical conditions can cause similar symptoms to bipolar (among other mental illnesses) These can include: pregnancy, thyroid conditions, ADD, ADHD, blood sugar problems, anemia. That is by no means an exhaustive list.

There is a possibility that there was an underlying medical cause for those symptoms that has resolved itself or been treated.

Either way, diagnoses are made by humans and humans are fallible. There is always the possibility that there was a mistake.

Gosh, I'm jealous. I wish that was me.

Maybe. I think the biggest clue would be what got the person diagnosed in the first place. If their were drugs involved (prescription or street), then probably a misdiagnosis (dx) or bipolar that won't be a problem if the drugs aren't taken. If there was a ton of stress and it was hypomania or mild mixed, then maybe wrong dx.

If the person started not needing much sleep and became manic to where s/he needed medical intervention or hospitalization and there were no drugs or major stressors, I bet on right dx w/long period of dormancy. Some ppl with bipolar go years without an episode. If that's it, I don't think I'd start taking meds again until I started to cycle. I mean normal could go on for years. BUT, when it started, I'd start meds pretty fast. Why put yourself thru what could be a very bad period?

On the whole I have to say that bipolar seems to have become a popular diagnosis. So, maybe docs are jumping there a little too quickly.

Anyway, hope that answers your question.

It might have been a wrong diagnosis, or maybe the person went into complete remission.

Some people with Bipolar Disorder stop having symptoms at some point.

Also, this person may be symptom free and off medications for the last four years. But there is no guarantee he or she won't start having symptoms again in six months, a year, etc.

I have Major Depression. I took medication from 1983 to 1984. And I didn't need medication again until about 1995.

It could work that way with Bipolar Disorder too.

It's also possible to still have symptoms but they are so mild that medications aren't necessary.

Bipolar CAN function without meds. I know of one person personally. It could have been wrong diagnoses though. Without observation--it would be hard to say.
