Getting Boarded for Bipolar Disorder?

I am in the Army and I have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. They have started a Med Board on me. What is the likely hood that I will get discharged from the Army?

Well, is your board in the winter or the spring? In the winter, you will probably be depressed and all moody, and you won't do good in front of the board. If it's in the spring, you will probably be all happy and friendly and you might just get through it?

Now what you should do is to see if there are any events in your past for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You can get some disability out of this if you play your cards right.

I know in the Air Force that is a disqualifying condition. Just a few weeks ago my buddy's friend in the Navy was discharged for having bi-polar. It seems as if Bipolar maybe disqualifying throughout the the whole DoD.

Since it is considered a condition which should have disqualified you in the first place (AR 40-501: Standards of Medical Fitness, para. 2-27) you will be given a General Discharge under Honorable Conditions under the authority contained in Chapter 5 of AR 635-200, for an EPTS condition.

The Army is not sympathetic to mental problems. Although god knows with Vietnam and Iraq they should be. I think your doctor does tell you if you wanted a discharge you could take one based on your symptoms. The army is not the be all/end all.

100% you will need to be on those meds for the rest of your life and being Bi Polar is a PDQ with no waivers authorized.

It is very high that you will get discharged. They don't want those kind of people within their ranks....
