Whats the best way to cope with a family member with bipolar disorder?

i cannot get this person to go get help. i cant cope much longer. help!!!

It sounds like he is in denial.

Not all that uncommon. He needs to be treated. You may need counseling yourself just to cope with him. If you have a pastor, start there.

The most important thing you can do right now is understand this disorder and how it affects all of you.

Keep the pressure on him to avail himself of whatever treatment is available for him.

Good luck.

sounds like everybody cares about this individual but at the same time everybody is tired and worn out due to the person's lack of insight or fear of getting help, do the best you can, if he/ she doesn't respond, not much you can do, however, if he/ she becomes a danger to himself/herself, may discuss the possibilty of committment procedure to a psyc facility to get the necessary help, until then, it's a waiting game

You won't be able to cope with it without medical and professional help. Unfortunatley, the person has to want to help themselves before you can help them. Just keep trying to get them to get professional help because bi-polar can be a serious disease.

There are many decisions you need to make. If this person is someone you need in your life, consider going to family therapy for yourself. It will help you work on the coping mechanisms to deal with the family member. My mother is bipolar and refuses to medicate. So, I limit my interaction with her. Educate yourself as well... resources below.

well my sister is bipolar and i know its hard...you just have to have pations with the person and just remember that they are very sensitine. as for getting them to go get help just keep trying to talk to them. tell them that your going to be with them every step of the way. and make sure that you convince them that your there for them when they need you. remember that its not their fault its an illness. if you dont know much about it then learn more about it it comes in handy.

I am bi-polar, been for ten years now. Have to hit bottom first,
Then they might go for help. Their's classes around which are free. DBSA metro detroit. website DBSA-metrodetroit.org
Open to anyone, I enjoy them.
Also there are all kinds of bi-polar symtoms, and great meds for it. It's not as ruff as you think.

try to calmly talk to them and choose your words carefully as not to upset them, and tell the that you really think that they should go get some help and you'll support them through it because whenever they start having mood swings it upsets you.

You might have to wait til they have a "meltdown" and then try to talk them to getting help. If they get suicidal call the police to come get them.

get meds and remember its an illness be supportive to the family member its not their fault and they need family help

Get a psychologist. Get medicine prescribed.

then you need to distant yourself.......you can not help someone who doesn't want help
