I dont understand what "ultra rapid cycling" means for bipolar disorder..? |
And how exactly would you define an episode? i have bipolar 1 and im guessing ultra rapid cycling probably means highs and lows very frequently, but specifically, how freguent? Like many within the hour, or a day? The term rapid cycling describes many different patterns of cycling. The underlying illness, bipolar disorder, manifests in episodes of mania and depression. But the pattern of cycles, the course of illness, is not fixed. It can be changed for the worse by many factors: drinking, street drugs, stressors, other medical illnesses, etc. The course of illness can also be improved by many factors: appropriate drugs, therapy, groups, this website. The course of illness is different in everyone, and the goal of treatment is to improve your course of illness. Rapid cycling is one example of a particularly poor course of illness. basically it means that the period (length of time between highs and lows) is attenuated (shortened). most folks have a relatively long cycle time from low to high moods. rapid cycling means that the mood swings are high frequency as in they change from one to the other in hours rather than days. (or even weeks- months) My son who is 10, rapid cycle's. It's where the moods change very frequently. I'm not talking about every 6 hours. My son he will go from happy, sad, depressed, manic, angry in 1 hour. NO JOKE. It's really hard on him and we just try and get him through it. well bipolar is when you feel on top of the world at one moment, and then feel so depressed another moment. Im just taking a guess but ultra rapid cycling could mean that a person would go between feeling great and then feeling depressed very fast. i was told the same thing it is when you go from sad to happy to on top of the world in a short period of time r the other way around episode is when you are up r down its where you go from being extremely happy or whatever to being really sad really fast. i think it means your happy |
