Can depression turn into bipolar disorder?

I've had major depression for three years, but for the past few months I've been experiencing symptoms of what you would call a mixed state. Im so exhausted and its wearing me out. Im thinking of suicide but I have so much energy and can laugh so much. I smile while I cut myself. I feel like im going insane. What's wrong with me?

I've been self harming for three years too and am seeing a psychiatrist and am on anti depressants. But I was just wondering coz these symptoms are different to depression. Oh also when I was in hospital there were two girls with bipolar combined with depression, so it can happen I think.

Not as such. You were misdiagnosed in the first place. A diagnosis can only be made on the symptoms which present at the time. Apparently, you were in the depressive phase. Mixed state bipolar disorder has a very high suicide rate, so it is vitally important that you seek treatment URGENTLY!!! Ensure you get diagnosed by a mental health professional.

Bipolar disorder is addressed in section 10, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris See page O first, but you will almost certainly need a mood stabiliser. View the suggestions on what to do about self harming, in section 16, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and contact them, when you feel the need to self harm/cut. Use one of the alternatives shown. There is much information, and useful weblinks in the website: far too much to fit in the allowable space here. Seek therapy, to help you address the actual cause of those problems, rather than using an inappropriate method of treating the symptoms, which others have found, doesn't work, in the longer term, and that leaves behind the extra problem of scarring to deal with, then. There is also a selection of treatments for scarring shown. So, are you aware of why you self harm?

The general reasons given are: depression (see section 2, at ezy build; page R first, then page V, young women's depression, & teen? depression; eventually the rest) anger (see section 4; page C first), attention seeking, or boredom (suggestions for both are in section 16). Consider taking up amateur abstract, impressionist, or surrealist art, clay modelling, designing and/or making fashion, or jewellery. Journalling those thoughts, and feelings, poetry, or story writing are some more options. No-one has to see them, but you may well surprise yourself at how good you become, with experience. Even if not, and you are totally dissatisfied with every single effort, it will still have served its purpose. Use that emotional energy, and allow it expression, through an activity other than self harm.

Suicide hotlines are in section 5, and bipolar chatsites, and forums, in section 10.

No, I don't believe depression can turn into Bi polar.
I would like you to do some research on 'borderline personality disorder" In a nut shell it means you border on several disorders, but can't be diagnosed as just one.
I have BPD. I have experienced many symptoms. And yes I have cut. Many many times. Please take my advice and read up on the disorder. Then try to find a therapist who is willing to treat it.
Trust me, not all therapists are qualified for this disorder. A lot of them don't even want to deal with it because it is so complex. Good luck to you! And I am here if you need me.

I didn't think so, but its possible.

If someone told you that they did this, what would you tell them to do? I think you need to see a doctor. Mental health issues are very complicated, and almost impossible to treat from the inside. In other words, a psychiatrist who you can talk to will sort your feelings into rows and columns, and teach you how to deal with them and make the bad ones go away.

No, its likely one or the other. But they do not evolve. BUT, the symptoms of Bipolar disorder can stay dormant and come out slowly but surely.

They did with me.

You could possibly have both depression and bipolar disorder. I going to go with bipolar because it sounds like you're currently going through a hypomanic phase.

i have bi-polar disorder. wat you are describing sounds more like psychosis. take urself to the er.

You need to see a psychiatrist. We can't tell you for sure.

Maybe it is not depression that turns into bipolar it could be depression is part of something else in you.

You might have what I do, seriously I was against the idea of being mentally ill for so long but anyways I was diagnosed with Cyclothymia. I can only guess my subconscious is in such a state of unrest that I am unaware of how much my mind is consuming that I end up having these huge fits of uncontrollable laughter.

And every other time I focus on everything that is bad and wrong with myself and the world. I only appear depressed if emotions get the edge of me, to be honest I quit using the drugs and adopted an apathy mind state towards many things.

But honestly you sound wonderful, I myself call it being "the human variable" However as much as one can raise the question what is wrong...let鈥檚 pretend there is no cure. Then I ask the question how can we make it right. Not through elimination but through acceptance, understanding the perception we have differs from others.

That when we consider suicide it鈥檚 a test of our self worth, and I say I must rise to that challenge. Because while everyone else in the world has it easy and I suffer panic disorder, I see it as a test to make me stronger even if it makes me look weaker.

But truly on that alone, I would like to know more about you. I think you鈥檙e a delightful person for you see a world only so many can see. And I want to know what you鈥檙e looking at, because even if people are seeing the same thing. It is how they see it, which makes them different.
