Is lying part of bipolar disorder? |
My fiance lies about little things every day almost, but tells me he honestly believes they are true. He used to tell stories about how he almost died, and cried over his friend commiting suicide, but i now know they aren't true. he's just started medicating, and just been diagnosed with hypomanic bipolar. can medication help? Yes and yes. Lying and professing profound stories that are untrue can definitely be a part of the bipolar disorder. Lying, especially telling full blown false stories is an act of mania. The good news is YES, medication can ABSOLUTELY help. The only problem that is seen a lot in patients with BPD, is that they tend not to take their meds. Either they suffer side effects (lots of times- sexual side effects), so they discontinue use and obviously they NEED the meds so, without them they either go manic or depressive. Another problem is that once they start meds and begin to feel better, they begin to think they don't need the meds anymore. They don't realize that they feel better BECAUSE of the meds. So if I were you, I would just be very weary of him discontinuing his meds against medical advice. Not because of anything to do personally with him, but just that this is a common problem with patients who suffer the same disease as him. Good Luck, with medication things should get much better for you two! He's a compulsive liar. I think that it could possibly have a connection. I have a friend with bi-polar and she lies about the dumbest things, and it is so annoying. She lies at least 5x every time we hang out. Yes, bipolar is a major factor in people lying. I just had a meeting with both of my doctors and my psychiatrist about this yesterday. I have bipolar disorder. I definitely agree with the first answer. |
