What are lamictal proscribed for or abilify?? i dont have seizures, but dont know if i have bipolar disorder or

not the doctor had told me that i had a mood disorder.whats the difference??

Both are prescribed for bipolar, and both are good for bipolar depression. You need to have a real conversation with your doctor. If he is not a psychiatrist, go get one. Psychiatrists are the MDs qualified to handle illnesses that go with those meds.

Lamictal is also used for epilepsy, and sometimes for hard to treat depression. Abilify, too, can be used for hard to treat depression. It's official purpose, however, is stopping psychosis.

Oops, the difference is that Lamictal is an anticonvulsant while Abilify is an antipsychotic. Generally, anticonvulsants or Lithium are better for maintenance of bipolar.
I think mood disorder is more general, and bipolar disorder falls under that category.
I have depression, along with rather bad mood swings/strong emotions during those swings (well, the 'swings' are mostly anger/irritation/sadness, not happiness, but whatever)--I'm not bipolar, though--and Lamictal has helped me enormously.
There are different mood disorders: Depression, Mania, Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymia, and others. Call your doctor back & see if the psychiatric nurse will take the time to explain the diagnosis to you, more clearly. The person should. Some health plans have groups you can go to, to discuss your diagnosis in more depth, or you can schedule an appt. with the psychologist at your doctor's office & ask that person for a fuller explanation. One way or another, you can get that info. on yourself!
Personal experience
To preface this, I do know I'm not always right, and if I say something horribly wrong, I won't be offended if someone corrects me. I'm not doctor, I've just been on the patient side of the desk long enough to know a couple of things.

I have been on both of those meds. Lamictal is an anticonvulsant/mood stabilizer, approved by the FDA for treatment of Bipolar I Disorder, and I ended up being allergic to it. Make sure you don't get a nasty rash--I'm sure your doctor's told you this, but if you get a bad rash, stop taking it!!! That's what happened to me. The rash could be deadly eventually if left unattended-to for a looong time. But anyway, don't worry about the fact it's an anticonvulsant. Doesn't have to mean you have seizures. A lot of anticonvulsants are suddenly coming up as legitimate medications for mood stabilization, antipsychotics, etc.

I, for one, am currently on Abilify, among other things. It's a newer antipsychotic (or was 4 years ago when I started taking it) and is often used to treat the symptoms of mania. For me, that is certainly the case. Racing thoughts, impulsivity, even grandiose delusions. It's all wrapped up with mania, and Abilify addresses that.

Hope that helps.

I take Abilify 10 mg for schizophrenia. It really helps. My symptoms have been in remission for 4 years now.
