Does Depo shot carry the same risks as birth control pill? |
Sister is considering going to the Depo shot and wondered if it carries the same risks for blood clots as the birth control pill? She's looking at some options before her doc's appointment next month. I could never take the regular birth control pill, so either had Loestrin or non-hormonal methods. I do know that we have a family history of increased blood clots at 60. Don't know if that is even related. Yes, every form of birth control (except IUD's) will carry the same risk of blood clots. If you have a family history, then the depo shot may not be a good choice for your sister. She can most certainly talk to her doctor about what would be best for her given the family history. it has all those risks, plus when I started depo I had period for the first 3 months. Spotting everyday. Just use condoms, that will keep her from getting STD's, also. Girls are more prone to have sex without protection if they're on birth control. |
