Birth control pills treating acne?

My doc has prescribed birth control pills to help lessen my periods and clear up my acne. I know it will help with my period but I was wondering what everyone thinks about the pill's ability to clear up skin.

birth control pills balance out your hormones, and sometimes acne is caused by the imbalance. yes, it can help. i don't think it would 100%, but it would help.

The pill clears up skin because it provides the body with excess estrogen, the hormone women secrete more of. It helps to cover the hormone testosterone, which both genders secrete, but men have more of. Testosterone, in excess, can cause acne breakouts, increased oil production and excess hair growth. The pill is OK for short term use but you have to be weary that you are taking a hormone and that it can mess with your ability to produce enough estrogen later when your not taking the pill.

I'm on Diane-35 for acne, and it works GREAT. I've tried numerous antibiotics and topical treatments, plus the Trycyclen birth control for acne, but none of them have worked nearly as well as Diane-35. It all depends on what type of acne you have. If it's hormonal, birth control will help for sure. Otherwise, try topical creams (prescription, not store-bought), or Accutane.

Since the break outs you get are also related to your hormones, when the pill change your hormonal levels, your skin also clears up. It can also help with mood swings, cramps, and all those other period related stuff that is affected by your hormones.

it varies from person to person but for most people that i've talked to and what i've experienced myself it helps out a lot. i was on Tricyclen for a while.... now i'm on Yasmine... both cleared up my skin pretty well. i still get a pimple here and there but it's not even close to as bad as it used to be. (i have the oily/dry/normal in some place skin.... sucks lol)

my older sis took birth control for a couple of years to lessen cramps, and she didnt have ne qcne at all. Recently she has stopped taking the pills, and she has been breaking out A LOT. So i think they do help with acne. my sis thinks so to

I was prescribed Yaz, it worked wonders on my period, mood, and surprisingly to me, I have only had 1 pimple in the 7 months of being on it!

Only some do. It depends on which brands. The best thing for acne is to clean your face 2x a day mousturize everyday exfoliate once a week and use a face mud mask or peel every 2-4 weeks.

Yes, it is true.

I started birth control to help with cramps and acne, and it works VERY well

yes...I have heard several times from my teenage daughters that this is a common treatment for acne.

I'm not sure but it increases your risk of breast cancer

Yes, but it doesn't help with the odd spot. Dammit. lol

i'm sure your doctor would know better than most people on here

They don't really work. I tried them. Tetra-tri cyclene or something like that. It actually made me super moody and my skin didn't change at all. But, they are different for everybody. That's just how they were for me, they worked for my friend. It's worth a try, anyway.
