Birth control pills? Girls only(unless your a male doctor)!!!1?

Okay I'm 17 Y.O and I was interested in taking birth control pills, but the only problem is I'm afraid because of all the dangerous side effects I've heard about it. So I was wondering does anyone know of any close to safe birth control pills that I can ask my doctor about? I want to take them because of period cramps.

They are all "safe." There are certain side effects for each different kind. I opted for the low estrogen dose (Lo-Esterin 24) because the my OB-GYN said it would probably work the best for me and my VERY painful cramps.

Explore different options with your Dr. You can always switch pills, too, if you don't like it.

i've been taking ortho tri cyclen for 3 years no bad effects. if your worried as about low hormone one's like ortho tri cyclen.

I am on Low-Ogestrel, and it's OK. The side-effects aren't dangerous, but for the first few months you might feel kind of crappy, and that goes for almost any birth control. I felt a little nauseous and kind of moody when I first started it, but that's it. My period cramps significantly less painful than they were when I was not on the pill (and that was in the first month I started taking them!).

Don't be scared, the doctor isn't going to prescribe you anything that will make you violently ill or anything like that.

I'm 49 years young (seriously) -- anyway, I took them for almost 10 years and didn't have any problems with them. There are side effects with ANY medications you take -- even antibiotics. Your doctor will know what's best for you after taking your blood pressure and medical history. Good luck and yes, it will help A LOT with your period. I went on them at 16.......

Your doctor will be able to provide the safest type that accommodates your needs. All medicines have POTENTIAL side effects. Personally, I never experienced any while being on the pill, patch, of shot.

i would take if i was u Yasmin and Ortho Try cyclen!

Every single pill has side effects (even vitamins!). Which side effects you, personally, experience will be up to your body. Your doctor will be able to recommend ones that are most congruent with your health history. It has been my personal experience that the lower hormone pills had fewer side effects. However, when I tried the "mini pill" (which has no estrogen-like hormones and low doses of the others) I had every side effect in the book. C'est la vie.

If you want to avoid the side effects, go for natural remedies, such as accupressure, yoga, exercise, diet changes, heating pads, thermacare pads, etc.

Ortho cyclene is pretty good from what I know. Regardless, ask for the lowest dose possible because you are at a lesser risk of negative side effects. I had an awfull time with Yaz birth control. It is the brand that says they can get rid of cramps, bloating, fatigue, mood swings etc. more than any other, but it magnified those symptoms in me. That dosen't mean that it will do the same to you, but I thought I would let you know. If you start taking the birth control and have any negative side effects, talk to your doctor about switching.

Do not take these brands...at all.

Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol (combination)
Apri-28
Cyclessa
Desogen
Mircette
Ortho-Cept
Reclipsen
Velivet
Kariva

It totally depends on your body. Only your doctor can decide what is best for you. Just to add for the one that said not to take Desogen. I was on it for 6 years and had NO side effects what so ever. Desogen is just like any other BC pill. Nothing is wrong with it.

I started with Ortho tricyclen for the same reason you want to start (also to reduce acne). I then moved onto Ortho low (Same thing just a little less hormones to them). Really was no difference between them. Just take them on time to ensure full effectiveness. I set an alarm on my cellphone to go off everyday at the right time. I NEVER missed.

I'd suggest not to go with the patch seeing as it fairly new (and I had a 22 year old friend have a MINOR stroke because of it, she was fine on the pill).

The side effects they list are different for everyone. You may not suffer ANY. The good thing about the pill is if you react badly to them you can stop right away. The depo shot takes 3 months to get out of your system and there is no way to reverse it.

Overall I'd suggest ortho low over the others... or any other similar low estrogen birth control pill that is out there.

Talk to your doctor and tell him why you want them, he will prescribe what he thinks is best. I don't recommend taking Yaz though. I took that for awhile and it messed up my period. My friend took it too, and it did the same thing to her.

All birth control pills have a risk of something, but they are rare. I have been on Yasmin and Ortho Try cyclen. Birth Controls sometimes take trying a few to get one that is right for you.
