Ovarian cysts...is taking birth control pills an effective treatment?

I have read here that taking birth control pills can help dissolve ovarian cysts. (They hurt so bad!!!) Is it true? How often do I have to take them? Once a day? Sorry if my next question sounds supid...If I take birth control pills everyday, does that mean I cannot get pregnant? Is this 100 foolproof or is there still a minimum risk of pregnancy? If I start taking birth control pills today, does that mean it starts to take effect immediately?

Yes- BC can help with ovarian cysts
Yes- BC helps prevent pregnancy but it not a 100% effective method- only complete abstinence is 100% effective

No- BC does not work right away- it takes about 3 months of using BC pills before you can have sex without an additional contraceptive being used

And where are you getting these BC pills? If they're not coming from YOUR doctor who has prescribed them for you after a physical exam you should NOT be messing with them. BC come with some potentially dangerous side effects and must be prescribed in the proper dosage for you by your physician. If you don't have one- you can make an appt at your local Family Planning clinic.

My friend has had this problem since the onset of puberty... She has been on the Depo Shot for years and years and it keeps the cysts and monthly pain away.

Depo isn't for everyone, but it works for her and she won't use anything else because other forms of birth control had side effects that she couldn't deal with.

She has to watch her bone strength but it has allowed her to keep her cysts at bay for 10+ years now.

Pill, Patch, Shot, Implant... Whatever works for YOU...

Go see your OBGYN and discuss what works best for you...

ive never heard that birthcontrol gets rid of ovarian cysts, ask a doctor about that one.
im pretty sure that no birth control is 100% effective, most are around 97-99 i think though.
i work in a hospital and saw some ovarian cysts that were taken out, and the biggest one was about 2.5 inches, it was pretty gross. idk, just thought i'd throw that out since were talking about them.

it is only 99.9% chance. birth control pills are like condoms. they don't always work. taking birth control pills are like taking regular medicines. and medicines/pills are not always affective. i know this because my friends dad is a docter. And yes taking medicines/pills is bad for you. you should not take a lot.

I had ovarian cysts too, my doctor put me on birth control to control it. So yeah I think so. Since the cyst is caused by your body preparing fo rmenstration. If menstration is prevented, as birth control does, then no cyst need to grow to develop into an ovum.
