Do you have to go to the doctor to get birth control pills? |
Can I just go to a pharmacy or something? I believe you should go to the dr. because he or she will determine the right type of pill for you. I was able to get my first pack without a pelvic exam. The dr. may want to check your blood pressure and get your family history because the pill can cause side effects. One just about ruined my gallbladder. The risk of stroke if you have high blood pressure or smoke can also be increased. The dr. is best but if you have had sex and want plan B it's best to talk to a dr. You can try with your regular dr. and don't worry about talking as it is confidential. You could also mention to your mom that you want to try it. It can help women who have long or heavy periods or help to regulate the cycles. Also if you want to delay a period, sometimes continuing a week of the hormone pills (not the placebo ones that you take when a period will come on) you can get an extra week like if you are getting married or going to a resort where you don't want to have your period. The pill has advantages and disadvantages so it's best to check with your dr. Good luck to you. In the United States, you do have to have a prescription for birth control (I believe this also applies in most other countries, as well). If you are 18 or older, you do not have to have a prescription for Plan B (aka EC or Emergency Contraception or "The Morning-After Pill") - you can just go to a pharmacy and buy that. There are so many different kinds that he/she is the one who will know best what kind is right for you. No only a licensed doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant can give these out.
