Girlfriend Skipped a Birth Control Pill????

Ok so during the first week of my girlfriends cycle she dropped a pill down the drain. She skipped the day and continued taking the pill on schedule the day after. We havent had sex since this cycle yet, but our anniversary is this weekend and the odds are we are going to. Now I just want to know if there is a big risk with having sex this weekend. This is now her third week in the cycle and she would start the placebo pills on sunday i think. She hasnt missed any other pills and she has talked to friends who have actually missed more then one in a month and just not takin them at all and have not gotten pregnant.

Obviously I dont want her to get pregnant but because it was the first week and the hormone has had a chance to build up i think we will be fine. Condoms are out of the question for certain medical reasons so please dont say just use a condom and u'll be fine. I just want input on on the chance of my girlfriend getting pregnant if we did have sex this weekend.
Thanks

There is a slight chance that her birth control was ineffective this cycle. There is always a chance. Most doctors will tell you not to worry so long as the rest of the pills were taken correctly. Things are most likely as they should be, but there is never 100% certainty. You'll have to weigh the risks to how it will potentially affect your lives.
Odds are, you guys will be fine, since she just missed one. I'm on birth control too, and I've missed before. I've never gotten pregnant because of it. The chances are extremely low. Have fun on your anniversary!
If this is not her first month on this form of hormonal birth control, and she has not skipped any other days, you two should still be protected. If this is still her first month on this birth control, you should use a back-up method anyway until she has gone a full four weeks on it.

There are other options than condoms. If you're allergic to latex, they make non-latex condoms. They also make female condoms. There are spermicide foams, strips, gels, etc., that you could use as well. You can use the birth control sponge, that is just inserted into her vagina and is nearly as effective as a condom. Check out details of these other options in the link in my sources box.

She may or may not get pregnant. When you miss a pill you are suppose to double up on the next day usually .Her pill pack has instructions on how to handle that.
As for dropping it down the drain, I would have just popped another out of a different day and took it until I found out what to do----because she ahd till the end of her pills to takecre of getting another pack etc..
Be careful!
Sigh. I really wouldn't recommend it. Probably the number one reason women get "mysteriously pregnant" while on the pill is that they don't take it correctly every day like they're supposed to. How long has she been on the pill altogether? Once you've been taking it regularly for some time (a year), your body's accustomed to it and you're in a slightly safer position.

It may be unlikely that she'll get pregnant, especially if she'll be almost on her period. That said, her friends who "missed more than one pill in a month" and "not taken their pills at all" and still had unprotected sex are flaming idiots, and you can tell them I said that. That is absolutely asking for it. You can't miss more than two pills in a row _ever_ without the birth control's efficacy dropping from 99 to about 60 or 50 percent.

You can't use a condom for "medical reasons"? There are non-latex condoms, you know.

Here are some sites on what to do when you miss a pill:
http://womenshealth.about.com/od/thepill...
http://www.brown.edu/student_services/he...
http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/home/healtht...

This latter website notes:

"Birth control pills work best when taken the same time each day. Try to associate taking your pill with another activity that you do approximately the same time each day, like going to bed or brushing your teeth. This will maintain a steady level of hormones in your system to protect you against break-through bleeding and possible pregnancy.

If you forget a pill, continue to take your pills as directed below and use a back-up method for at least 7 days. Missing pills puts you at significant risk for pregnancy if no back-up method is used."
Oh, P.S. I think if she would have just called her doctor, they could have gotten her a single "make-up" pill for that one she lost.
