Do I have to take my birth control pill the exact same time every day for it to protect against pregnancy?

or is it okay to be off an hour or so?

I'm on Tri-Cyclen (a low dose one I think) I try to take it at 11:00pm every night but sometimes its at 10:30 or 12:30 or 1:00am
Is this bad?

It's fine. Just don't miss a dose completely. Source(s): http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/norges...
sure
Thats close enough-------dont stress out over a small window on this one-------your doing fine.
tacking your pill at the same time or a different time wont do any harm
You should be ok, however most doctors recomend taking your pill withing a 1/2 an hour window each evening.

If you can plan a closer schedule you increase the effectiveness of your bc.

Part of how effective it is depends on how you use it and how faithfully you take it.
It is not necessary for it's function. The only reason they recommand to take it always at same time of the day, is that if two doses are taken very near, you might get side effects such as being really dizzy and nauseous. And I would disregard the comment that said "just don't miss one". Of course it might be better not to, but it's not dramatic. It is different for each type of pill but, for an exemple, mine (Diane35) says that I can miss up to 3 doses and still be protected. Just need to NOT take the missed ones and just take the 4th one at my regular time. But if I were to miss more doses, it says to literally stop treament, see a doctor, take a 1 month break then restart. Anyways so back to point, while it is recommanded, no, it won't affect, at all, the protection. :)
