Are you still protected during the 4th week of your birth control, when your on the placebo pills? |
Ive been taken Ortho Tri-Cyclen for about 10 months now and i have sex pretty often. I know your supposed to get your period during the days you are on the "Green pills" but I am also aware that they are just placebo pills and give no medication. Ionly have my period 3 out of the 7 days of the green pills. Is it still as safe as the rest of the time to have sex during those days where im basically not taking anything? Yes and no. It is difficult to become pregnant while on your period, however it is not impossible. At the same time, taking b.c. for a prolonged amount of time (and I would consider 10 months a good length), your body has become apt to maintaining a certain estrogen level to decrease the chance of becoming pregnant. Even though you many only bleed for 3 days, your cycle is still finishing and your reproductive organs are in a state that is more reflective of being on your period than off-cycle. If you worry that you may become pregnant, use a condom for back up. Yes you are protected. I used the pill for years all different kinds and I never got pregnant and I had sex durring the placebo day's. Lets put it out there. Many of the women I know have had children while on birth control, myself included, and that is when they were strong. these new ones that are less strong are probably not as effective. So, I would make sure to use extra protection if pregnancy is a really nooooo for you. That way you are protected. It is not 100% with the pill no matter what they say, I believe it's less than they actually say. So many things affect medications and hormones and to depend on them for really life altering changes is not easy...take your own precautions. Good luck. With this type of pill you are not actually menstruating, that is shedding the lining of the uterus. Long ago, manufacturers felt that women would be too freaked out if they took pills and had no menses. So they designed a placebo cycle in their 28-day packs to provide that brief bleeding, but that is all it is, bleeding, not a period. You cannot get pregnant during this part of the cycle because the pill has already done it's work by suppressing ovulation to begin with with the active pills. Some pills can be taken continuously, suppressing periods for months at a time with no apparent ill effects. If you wanted to, you could skip taking the green pills altogether and just start your new pack on the sunday after you start to bleed, unless you need the reminder. Nurse Yes, because the estrogen is still in your system. It takes two months for it to leave your system. You have enough estrogen to be protected. Been on the pill for fourteen years. |
