Does taking birth control pills, really help w/period problems? |
I see ads for birth control pills that helps give u 1 period a year and there are others. My question is does that work? and is it safe to stop your menstrual cycle ? any side effects? When you're on the pill, you are still discarded your uterine lining. You are just not realeasing any eggs. So it is a "real" period. It does work. Some scientists believe it's even good for you. They say there's a reduced risk of ovarian or uterine cancer. So if that's what you want to do, then go for it. There have been some side effects for some women, but it is rare. These are irregular menstrual bleeding nausea, weight gain, headaches, dizziness, and breast tenderness mood changes blood clots (rare in women under 35 who do not smoke) . The 1-period/per year are fun for some women. When you're on the pill, you really aren't having a period. A period requires that your uterine lining gets discarded. Most doctors will agree that the "period" the pill puts you on isn't needed. It was created for women to make them feel more at ease. My best suggestion is to talk to your doctor. Birth control pills control your hormones, which cause your body to have one period or more periods depending on the hormones you take. Talk to your doctor though. They sure do! I started taking them 6 years ago when I was 17. I have endometriosis which makes periods extremely long, heavy, and painful. I would have to wear a "heavy day" pad for 4/5 days of my period and I could not get of bed. When I started the pill, it only lasts 3 days now, I use either regular or light days (with overnight for bedtime) pads and I don't have the same pain I used to. I only take about 1-2 advils a day as opposed to 6! Not to mention, I know exactly what day I will get my period and exactly what day it will end. I take seasonale and only have a period every 3 mths. I started it because I had severe cramps like you wouldn't believe and now I have no cramps whatsoever and when I do have my period it's very light and only couple days. There are side effects that you can see at seasonale.com but they are minimal. Yes, it works. It's completely safe, it just may take some time for your body to get adjusted. You might see break-through bleeding until your body gets used to it. It's safe, I might want to try having 3 or 4 periods a year, it might be easier for your body to adjust. Talk to your doctor, he'll know for sure what's best for you. |
