Birth control pill question... mid-cycle starting...?

I was on the pill for 2 1/2 years and went off of it for a few months. I hadn't gotten my period again yet (b/c your period is messed up after going off the pill - I know this), and I started takin the pill again... I know I know, probably shouldn't have, but it's too late now.

I've been taking them for 3 1/2 weeks, do you think I'm protected?

I've read that if you start the pill mid-cycle (which I kinda technically did...) that you need to wait 7 days, but I've also heard you need to wait a month. What do ya'll think?

You're fine after seven days - even if you had ovulated, the pill also prevents an egg from implanting and changes your cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to get through.
Use a back up method (like condoms) until your first menses after you started the pill. Otherwise you can become pregnant without ever resuming your menses.

If you had unprotected sex while off the pill, it's entirely possible that you're pregnant now, and that's why you never had a period. Please make sure to check this out if it's even remotely possible with a simple urine pregnancy test. You don't want to be on the pill if there's any chance of pregnancy.

P.S. the pill works by suppressing ovulation. And the period you get on a pill isn't a real period, it was designed in by the pharma companies because they were afraid to suppress menstruation all together. Since you never ovulated on the pill, you never developed a uterine lining to shed, which is why you menstruate. That said, you can think of a pill 'period' as a 'fake' menses.
