Should I still take my Birth Control pills?

I experienced cramps earlier in the day and I was concerned that I might be pregnant. I took a test and was negative, so I ruled that out. I was engaging in sexual intercourse and it was almost like I had my period. I believe it was "breakthrough bleeding". I have not missed a period, but I have messed up my birth control pills taking them late, hours or even up to a day late. Should I still take my birth control pills and finish the cycle?Until I get my period, I have 1 week left.

First of all, and if you read nothing else, please read this: IF YOU SKIPPED ONE PILL IN YOUR PACK, YOU NEED TO USE BACK-UP BIRTH CONTROL!!!!! (condoms, etc.)

If you were within a week of your placebo pills, just throw away this pack and start a new pack on the 1st day of your next cycle (follow the directions on the direction sheet for your birth control pills to figure out which is the first day of your cycle). If you have been skipping pills or taking them late, you may have been spotting, which is completely normal. Please make sure you take your pills at the same time every day.

Also, take another pregnancy test--preferably at the doctor's office--in a couple of weeks, just to make sure, especially if you didn't use back-up birth control after the change in your dosing schedule.

P.S. In re: your additional details, you don't say how long after you had unprotected sex you took your pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests have been known to be wrong. I don't care if the one you took was negative. Take another one in a few weeks just to make sure, OK?
It depends on the pills you are taking.

Go find the box and read the instructions there, but most tell you to stop taking the pills immediately if you suspect you are pregnant and see a doctor.

Pregnancy tests can be wrong, especially if this is your first period since getting pregnant, it can take as little as a couple weeks to show pregnant, but it can also take as long as two MONTHS to get accurate results.
I wouldn't equate cramps with pregnancy unless there is more going on than you are sharing. Keep taking your pills and if you miss your period, take another test, or see a doctor or clinic to be sure.

Cramps could be other things, like bad pizza
Three pregnancies
You might be pregnant. First off, did you take two pills as SOON AS YOU REMEMBERED that you'd forgotten a pill? Even a few hours makes a difference, and definitely a day. If you didn't, always do that in the future. You can't know from a pregnancy test whether or not you're pregnant a week before your period, the hormones that the test looks for haven't kicked in yet.
Yes, finish the cycle. It won't harm the baby, f you've heard it will, it's a myth. Use condoms during sex for the next few days.
