How can I improve vein health for better blood donations? |
For one year, I was donating whole blood regularly. Sometimes it was successful, other times it wasn't. I'm AB+, so I switched to giving platelets. The first 2 times took over 2 hours, since they had to use the machine's lowest setting - otherwise, the blood would stop flowing. Yesterday (#3), they had to stop early due to swelling and pain because the initial needle stick didn't hit right. The only veins they can find to use are side veins. As far as I can tell, I'm well- hydrated at the time of donation. I'd like to know if there is anything I can do (food, supplements, exercise) to enlarge and/or strengthen my veins for a better donation.
