My blood type is O-. Who can I donate to, and who can I receive donations from? |
Thanks Maria L., I already do donate blood, I'm just curious as to how the donations and transfusions are grouped. You can give blood to ANYONE! Persons with O blood type do do not have either A or B antigens on the surface of their RBCs, but their blood serum contains IgM anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies against the A and B blood group antigens. Therefore, a group O individual can receive blood only from a group O individual, but can donate blood to individuals of any ABO blood group (ie A, B, O or AB). If anyone needs a blood transfusion in a dire emergency, and if the time taken to process the recipient's blood would cause a detrimental delay, O Negative blood can be issued. You are the universal donor. You may only receive from other O negs. I think O is the universal donor but can only receive donations from O The red cross would love your donation. You can donate to several hundreds of people that way. You can give to everybody and receive from O only. They have to have the same blood type. Type O. Main 2 things about O type blood : Type O is the universal donor, not O+ or O- just O. You can donate to O- blood types and recieve blood from O or O- blood types only. If you want to be sure call your blood bank at your local hospital. They can tell you everything you want to know. It is hard to get neg. blood so hospitals love to have neg. blood donations. They were always calling my Dad, sister and brother cause they all had neg. blood. Neg. blood is needed more in the winter than summer because of car accidents on bad roads. You are not a universal donar because you have no RH factor. Only O is the universal donor, AB is the universal recepient. It can be given A, B, AB, or O but not neg. blood unless it is AB- . The people who told you that your type was the universal donor were wrong, you can't be - or + to be the universal donor just O. You don't have to take my word for it call the blood bank at the hospital or the red cross. |
