Veins ruined from blood donation? |
I've always loved donating blood, I figured this was the easiest way for me to help people in need "the gift of life" and whatnot. I started out giving whole blood when I was a teenager and continued donating for several years. I switched over to donating platelets when my uncle had cancer and was getting platelet infusions. After donating platelets 1-2 times a week for about two months the techs were having a hard time sticking me. I took about two and a half years off, thought that would give my veins time to heal. I tried again today and was told that the veins in one arm are totally shot, very fiberous (scar tissue). The veins in my other arm aren't much better, blew out as soon as she stuck me. Has anyone else had this happen and were you able to remedy the situation? I'm in my late 20's now and would hate it if I couldn't give blood again. (I've tried whole blood during this two year break and couldn't manage that either) I have never had any problem giving blood and got my gold badge. However I succumbed to RA, so that put paid to that. Now I have to have blood tests and trying to locate the vein is almost impossible. The reason, I am now 'deep veined'. Few years ago they thought I had a spiral fracture of my arm, turned out to be a shadow of my vein! However, I have to have frequent blood tests once every 3 months and I notice on a nice warm sunny day, no problem with finding a vein. However when it is cold outside, they have to visualize where the vein should be, because they cannot see or feel it! If you think that is bad, I have a rule three strikes and you are out! Just as they locate the vein, pop, it collapses and so try the other arm. As to why? I think Physician and Nurses get to know the Patients, so by sticking to the same people, they get to know what to do. However last time at the Hospital they ended up taking it out by my wrist and did they make a mess, my hand swelled up! So my trick, I wear warm clothing, do a quick run around to get the blood pumping and stay warm until they are ready with all the gear. Only then do I remove my clothing and hey presto, no problem. Best of Luck |
