Why can't I take aspirin before a blood platelet donation? |
The red cross asks that you not take any products containing aspirin 72 hours prior to giving platelets by aspheresis. Why is this? Aside from the destruction of the platelets, some people are allergic to aspirin. So you may be putting your donee at risk when you take aspirin prior to the blood platelet donation. Aspirin, specifically the acetyl part, inactivates platelets. So your donation would be of no value. it makes your platelets wonky You won't bleed out, that's for sure, but if you were are heparin, warfarin or coumadin it would be much worse. The guy who said the platelets would be damaged knew what he was talking about. |
