Blood Donors and Transfusions in South Africa?

It is almost Easter weekend, just got a call this afternoon form SANBS that I must please come to donate blood. In the USA blood donors get paid to donate blood but not in SA. Do you know why SA's do not get paid? Or can you think of a reason.

Quite honestly, Lise, I think that no one should pay for blood, donation,,,It should simply be a donation from one human being to another,,,otherwise, this also, attracts the wrong type of people for donation ie, drug addicts, etc, and the SANBS will have more problems that will arise,.

Canada does not pay their donors either.

In the U.S.A. most donors do NOT get paid to donate blood. There are for-profit businesses to which people can go and donate PLASMA for a fee. But most WHOLE BLOOD is collected by the Red Cross or local hospitals, and they NEVER pay...it is a volunteer service from people in the community.

In Germany people also used to be paid for blood donations, now not any more. Their argument being that this sorts out the bulk of the disease carriers like drug users and such. Having to test all these blood donations for each and every disease each time would be very expensive. Plus the possibility of blood contaminated with drugs can be eliminated to a great extent.

One can still donate plasma and be paid 15 Euros. It used to be 20 Euros,.The people who go there also look like they are just there to get some money for the next fix or dop.

So, now blood donations are not remunerated, but one has a mini-check-up, with blood pressure, haemoglobin count and the like. After donating, one is made to sit down and eat bread rolls with cold meats etc on it, and drink coffee, tea, juice or water. There is an old lady who practically forces one to eat. Sometimes there are also biscuits or yoghurts to take home.

I know now they are a non-profit organisation. I just could not believe that. My wife is working for them since Dec 08 and told me that. However, being a donor myself, I think no payment is needed and I view this as a donation and you usually do not get payment for donations.
