Why cant my GF who lives in the UK donate blood because shes had a blood transfusion when she was younger?

she had the transfusion in the early 90's. shes healthy now!

I like your answers, but her slightly older sister IS able to give blood.

It could be because of CJD - the human form of mad cow disease. There was an outbreak of this in the 90s. It is/ was believed that CJD (always fatal) was contracted from eating affected meat.
In Australia anyone who lived in the UK during a certain period in the 80s and 90s is not allowed to donate blood just in case they have the disease (it takes a long time to manifest - maybe 20yrs)

cause the bad blood could still be in her

well some people just are afraid to.... i would know! If you want her to donate blood so bad than you donate it. stop being selfish. If she doesnt want to donate blood dont make her.

Because she could be a carrier of HIV

Blood screening wasn't as good back then as it is now so her blood isn't considered safe enough to donate, there are many other reasons people are not allowed to donate also, I believe we in Australia have the same rules.

people who lived in the UK during certain periods of time or received blood in the UK could be at risk for variant Creutzfieldt-Jakob Disease (hope I spelled it right) or vCJD. Until there is a test to detect this disease in the blood, those people cannot donate. Not to worry, I'm sure she is fine, but people who need transfusions are already very ill and can't risk getting blood with even a trace of something bad. Sorry.
