Can a massive blood transfusion change a persons personality? |
My husband had a massive blood transfusion done several years ago, and ever since he has now more allergies and his personality has been completely changed to the point that I don't know him anymore. Please help Nope, a transfusion just provides blood for the immediate use. It all gets replaced by your own personal made blood within a few weeks for the red blood cells and a few months for the white cells. Inside about 4-6 months, everything floating around inside is all yours. The injury or disease that required the transfusion might have an adverse mental effect on the person, but not the blood. Allergies can develop at any age, so that's not at all related. The personality conflict could be due to lots of reasons, stress, or life changes most likely- or things in the relationship may have altered. I'd say you sound like good candidates for marriage counselling, if that is an option. I don't know what the dynamic is going on here, but it's not related to the blood transfusion. Eventually the blood they transfused will be destroyed and replaced with his own blood. It should have no effect. my daughter ahd opened heart surgery twice and she changed both times Well i know that if someone gets a heart transplant, they become more like the donor... they even remember things the donor experienced. their eyes even change to the colour of the donor's eyes. i imagine you would get the same effect to a lesser extent with a blood transfusion. no The experience alone could have changed his outlook on life. In massive bleeds most of the transfused blood itself is bled out too. How many units of blood were given? What other blood components were transfused? I have seen massive units of RBC's where in excess of 30 . |
