My friend needs a blood transfusion.. he's O+? |
I'm an A+... would I be able to donate some blood to him? Well, i'm not AN A+ lol, what I meant to say was my blood type is A+. no NO! An O+ patient can receive blood only from an O+ (type O, Rh positive) or O- but no other type. An A+ donor can donate to either another A+ or to an AB+ if the serum is first removed from the whole blood. Blood is normally transfused as "packed red blood cells" prepared by removing the serum which may contain potentially harmful antibodies if the two types are not identical. Because the many tests that must be performed on a donated pint of blood take over 24 hours, blood is usually selected from what is in stock in the hospital blood bank refrigerator. Your donation would likely be available for another patient, or it could be given to a person of your type after the testing is done. Do donate. Less than 6% of all potential donors give this wonderful gift of life to another. It is possible to do a directed donation. Some hospitals are large enough to handle the collection and screening process entirely internally, while others will have to reply on the Red Cross (or a similar organization) to do it for them. People cannot donate blood directly to someone easily. You have to donate blood, have it screened for diseases and typed which all takes a lot of time. It is easiest for a person to receive blood from the blood bank system that has appropriately typed and screened blood which matches his blood type. If you really want to help him, be a blood donor when the blood bankmobile comes to your area. He is receiving donor blood from somone and you too can save someone's life by donating. No. O can be thought of as blood with zero additives. Your A is blood that has additions to it that would not be tolerated by him. An O- person can donate to anybody because there is nothing in there to react badly with anything else. But the O person gets screwed on the deal and can only receive O blood themselves. They are the universal donor but quite limited in what they can receive. I'm O+ too and I think that means I can receive blood from any blood type..so if I'm right then YES you can give him your blood. My bad...I just looked it up and type O -/+ can only receive blood from other type O people. there is no need to donate blood for your friend. even if you did, they would have to get it tested and that takes too long when there is blood at the blood bank that your friend could use. No an O+ can donate blood to any blood type but can only receive from O+. The good news is that O+ is the most common so your friend shouldn't have a problem finding it. You should be able to donate. He wont get your blood, but your blood will make up for the loss of blood that he takes from someone else. Check with the hospital where he is at. |
