Introduction of the wrong blood type can cause death due to anaphalactic shock through repeated exposure. There are several identifying proteins on the surface of red blood cells and white blood cells which help determine "self" versus "foreign." For blood, the three most prominent indicators are glycoproteins named A, B, and Rh. Rh is either present or not (+/-). Thus a blood type may A+, AB-, etc.

After one transfusion, a person may not have a serious issue, but the immune system will go around and kill all the red blood cells, potentially leading to jaundice, other liver, or kidney problems. On the second introduction, anaphalactic shock may result.

Another factor to consider is that the injected white blood cells, introduced during a whole blood infusion, will attack a recipients own blood because they think they are foreign - which is a lose-lose situation.

Now, blood types can be less important depending on what portion of the blood is introduced. If only the plasma is used, then red blood cell typing is less important because they are absent.

because if a person was to get the incorrect blood type it would affect there internal organs and cause a mix of incorrest blood cells and kill the person who gets the blood transfusion. and the incorrest blood is not right for that body to live on.

Take Type O Negative, universal and can be used with any blood type.
