Iron infusions (not blood transfusions)?

i've been dealing with being anemic for the last month and a half. my doctor is now sending me to get an iron infusion once a week for five weeks. is anyone familiar with this procedure? i'm a little nervous....

hi yadal, I've been getting iron infusions for the past 2 yrs. due to severe anemia myself. It's really nothing. I go to my hemotologist's office and sit in an area with a tv, recliner, and a curtain for privacy.

The RN will start an iv with saline for 15 minutes to make sure things are working. Then she starts the infusion (you don't feel a thing) which takes around 4-5 hrs. seeing as it can not go in fast otherwise the body will swell up.

Once you are done, you get a script to have blood drawn after a week and by then, your iron count will be where it should be. nothing to be nervous about. Bring a good book, an ipod, lunch, etc. and just relax.
