How safe do you think Blood Transfusion is?

How safe do you think Blood Transfusion is?

Blood used in a transfusion is rigorously tested for blood borne pathogens, but nothing is 100% safe.

If you are concerned, perhaps a family member of the appropriate blood type would be willing to donate. That would take a lot of the risk away if you knew they were healthy and not at risk for diseases like HIV or hepatitis.

Blood transfusion is very safe. Donated blood is tested several times for HIV, Hep, and any other disorders that would make the blood unusable. When any such disorder is found, the blood is discarded and the person who donated it is notified of the test results and told that they can no longer donate blood.
Personal experience I've witnessed: My mother was in the hospital and needed blood. A nurse came in the room with the blood, and checked both the container and my mother's bracelet ID#s several times to make sure it was the correct type before administering the transfusion.

I'd imagine it's pretty safe these days. Aren't they supposed to screen all the blood before they use it? I'm really not sure.

If the transfusion you're talking about is just a possible transfusion, like for an upcoming surgery, you can give some of your own blood in advance.

Sorry, that probably was not very helpful.

It's as safe as we can make it. It is screened for various blood-borne diseases and the crossmatch is very tightly controlled.

It's only given when the patient medically needs it.

Knowing what I know about the safety, if I needed a transfusion I would not worry about getting it.

There are many health risks associated with blood transfusions. It's also a moral decision for some. Try a safer blood transfusion alternative, such as saline solution, etc. I, personally, have a medical directive in my wallet stating that I will not accept blood.

Here is some info on what the do to screen the blood before doing a transfusion. It is so much more monitored these days. I would do it in a heartbeat if I needed it!

i have had several...also my daughter works in a blood bank and they test and retest....

moderately safe. I would see if my friends with the same bloodtype would donate first

I think its about 44%

I do not think it's safe. i wouldnt do it. they have so many more aptions now 'a days. Don't take blood.
