Why would someone's blood level drop to the point where they needed a transfusion? ?

Could this be a sign of leukemia? She is not bleeding internally. Could it be caused by a medicine she's on? She has a good doctor but they haven't pinned it down yet.

Hi Cee T,

The main causes are heavy periods, pregnancy, gluten intolerance, Chron's disease, lack of vitamin B12 and/or folic acid. vegetarians are often affected also.

Leukaemia is way down on the list, that is more to do with white cells than red, and we are dealing with red ones here.

I hope this helps to put your mind at rest.

Love mel.X

It could be leukemia - Acute Lymphatic Leukemia - Just had a patient with really low blood counts and is now receiving chemo -

However there are other reasons for low blood count other than cancer
Such as idiopathic anemia, heavy periods (I've seen them as low a 5 for women with heavy periods) don't get all upset until the diagnosis comes in -

I hope everything turn out fine for you and whoever you're worried about

My friends platelet level dropped....he had Leukemia.

My dad hemoglobin dropped.....he was in acute kidney failure....he needed a blood transfusion.

My iron level dropped from bleeding. I needed surgery.

There could be so many different reason why.

Insist on having more tests done. Don't let them tell you, we don't know. Keep on testing. Change doctors. Change hospitals. Change laboratory. Speaking from painful experiences.
