What to expect for a blood transfusion?

My brother is 16 and had been having internal bleeding due to a stomach ulcer, and has become anemic because of it. He has been very sick for a while but only since he's lost an unhealthy about of weight and started passing out and throwing up blood has my dad started taking ot seriously. (He lives in a different state than me, and despite me and my brother asking him constantly, he's only now agreed to take him to a real doctor.)

There is a good chance he will need a blood transfusion, according to what he told me on the phone today.. and he asked me a lot of questions about it and I didn't really know that answers...
What should be expected for a blood transfusion to treat iron deficiency anemia?
Are there any serious risks? And will he need to stay in the hospital for a certain period of time afterward?

Any information at all will be greatly appreciated.. Please help, I am very worried for him..

Thank you so much!

My husband had to have blood transfusions when he was sick. There was a special area of the hospital to do this, so he didn't have to be admitted. He sat in a recliner during the transfusion, which takes a long time--a really long time. Make sure your brother has something to keep himself occupied, including something to eat and drink while he's there.

The transfusion will be in an IV. They will have to match his blood then start him on one. It will depend on several things as far as staying a long time. If he has no trouble taking it and he doesn't have to take very many pints he should be able to get out in a day. There are alway risk with everything but it is probably lower than not taking the blood. My mother had six pints a couple of years ago and did very good.

I had two blood transfusions and it took hours to complete. I was hooked up to a blood pressure monitor and each time the machine took my blood pressure it was very painful. I thought my arm was going to break. Some transfusions for people are painful.

lots of blood.
