Why certain combinations of donor and recipient blood are not suitable for blood transfusion?

Why certain combinations of donor and recipient blood are not suitable for blood transfusion?

Because blood types are based on antigens present on the surface of the blood cells, and the plasma contains the complementary antibodies, certain blood types are not compatible.

A person with type B blood cannot be given type A in a transfusion because his blood contains anti-A antibodies, and will cause the donated blood cells to agglutinate. A person with type AB blood can receive any blood type in a transfusion, because his blood contains no antibodies to react with the donated blood, etc.

The antibodies in the donated blood will react with the recipient's blood also, but the amount of antibody is so small as to be of no consequence.
