When you receive a blood transfusion, what happens to the DNA of the blood you recieved? |
When you receive a blood transfusion, what happens to the DNA of the blood you recieved? Red cells have very little DNA so this is not a problem. Only white cells have DNA but most transfusions are now of leucodepleted red cells so an incredibly small amount of DNA is transfused, any that is will be removed through the normal processes of cell destruction and sequestration and will not replicate or "change" the DNA of the individual. The only thing that can change is the ABO/RhD blood group when a stem cell transfusion has taken place |
