Why would a cancer patient need repeated blood transfusions? |
Why would a cancer patient need repeated blood transfusions? Usually a cancer patient needs a transfusion because of a reduction in the number of red blood cells (anemia) during chemotherapy or radiation. Sometimes it is just because of the cancer itself. Chemo and radiation can cause the red blood cells (hemoglobin) to drop making the patient feel tired amd have no energy. This is due to the oxygen carried around by the red blood cells decreasing. It's very uncomfortable and can be life threatening. A blood transfusion is a quick way to reduce the effects of treatment induced anemia and almost immediately makes the patient feel better. Patients can also have 'platelet transfusions to help the blood clot and prevent bleeding.' A patient who is having repeated blood transfusions may need to stop chemotherapy or radiation until their red blood counts improve. Source(s): Experience.
