People are(actually physically walking) for breast cancer, they walk and raise funds as they go,they walk in the memory of those who have died and also for the brave ones who are now fighting it.

were I live it is usually between about 10 miles and you ask people to sponser you for every mile you walk they give you 50 cent or whatever . . that money goes to the organization that is sponsering the walk and there is one for lung cancer as well as others . . usually radio stations will be on site for the walk and hand out prizes to the walkers and other sponsers will give free drinks(water/sport drink) to the walkers . . it's to raise $$$ for the cause . . the March of Dimes is the best walkathon to participate in it's longer but the sponsors are great t-shirts, coozies, food, entertainment and of course your raising money for a good cause. . . oh and if you really want to you can run or jog they don't make you walk . . . .hope this helps

It's a marathon length walk, it takes place over two days.

Anyone who registers while there's still places can join the walk.

The walks take place in various locations.

The aim is to collect money, for example for breast cancer research and to help under-insured people pay for treatment.

I found that out in 30 seconds by googling.

Why not jog? Because it's a walk - there are several running events for cancer charities too.

Why not for lung cancer? There are fundraising events for several types of cancer; this one happens to have been organised to raise money for breast cancer reseach etc. Anyone is at liberty to organise a fundraising event for lung cancer - you could do it.

they walk to raise money to help people/ research into Breast cancer check out this website.

Scientifically, there is no reason. The people who walk get sponsors to pay them money for walking, in other words DONATIONS. They get so much a mile or the person just pays one amount. This money is then turned over to the American Cancer Society or other breast cancer organizations who in turn give it to lab scientists who are trying to find a cure for breast cancer. So walking has nothing to do with breast cancer, it has everything to do with donations received by that walker for walking in these relays. The walking is done in city's and towns all over American and probably Canada. The people who usually walk are breast cancer survivors, people who are fighting breast cancer and survivors of those that have died of breast cancer. If they want to jog, they can. Whats important is how far they go and receiving the money for walking. Why not for lung cancer? These breast cancer walks are specifically for breast cancer, I am sure those people have their ways of raising money for lung cancer research also.

I know with the Avon Breast Cancer Walk it's either 39miles or 49miles and takes place over two days. Each person that signs up to walk has to raise $1,800 that money goes to help find a cure for this terrible disease. People pay people to walk because a lot of people have been affected by breast cancer and they like to donate money so some day there's a cure and people wont have to go through it. You can donate in honor of someone or in memory of someone or just to help out. Most people that walk are doing it in honor/memory of a loved one or they are survivors themselves.
