Can i get Breast Cancer at the age of 18 or 19?

My mother died from breast cancer on July 2004 at the age of 38 she was gonna turn 39 in September 2004, im 18 and about to turn 19 yrs old on July, im single and never had any sexual intercourse. My both of my boobs itch around the ariola, and when I itch them they get red, sometimes they feel dry, is that a sign of breast cancer? Is there a chance of me getting breast cancer at this age?

It's extremely unusual for someone as young as you are to have breast cancer, and the symptoms you describe don't sound like breast cancer.

Only 5 -10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors, the rest are random.

Your mother had breast cancer at a young age, and the younger you are when a cancer occurs, the more likely it is that an inherited genetic tendency has played a part; even so your mother's breast cancer may have been random rather than genetic

As she had breast cancer at such a young age you will be regarded as at increased risk. Do you know if she carried one of the faulty BCRA genes that are responsible for genetically inherited breast cancer? I f she did, you have a 50% chance of having inherited it, though this does not mean you will definitely get breast cancer.

Women who carry these genes have an 80% chance of getting breast cancer at some point in their lives - but this still means that one in five of women with the gene will not get breast cancer.

That is the first thing to establish - find out if you can if her cancer was genetic and see your doctor about genetic testing if necessary.

Good luck
.

First let me say I'm sorry about your mom. My mom is fighting the battle of breast cancer now!

It's not likely that you'd get it at your age but I guess it's not impossible. The symptoms you are describing though, sound more to me like maybe an allergic reaction to your laundry detergent or bath soap? I'm not a proffesional or anything!

Cancer CAN be hereditary. If your mother had it then you are more likely to get it. When my mom was diagnosed her oncologist told me that women should start getting mamograms at age 40 BUT since we now have a family history I should start getting them at 25!

5-10% of breast cancer is thought to be heredity!
Here are the top 4 things that CAN put you at a higher risk for breast cancer!

Did you have your first period before age 12?
Did you have your first child after age 30?
Are you childless?
Did/does your mother have breast cancer?
Do you have any sisters who have had or have breast cancer?

If you are overweight, you're at a higher risk also. Just because you may fit all four of these things doesn't mean you will get breast cancer. It just means that you should start getting mamograms early. (late 20's early 30's) Some people don't have any of these risk factors and have still gotten breast cancer so you never know. But it's better to be safe then sorry.

Go to the doctor and talk to them about what is going on. Normally they say that around the time you should start getting a yearly mammogram is around the age that the person in your family got it. I know this because I asked them when I should get my first mammogram and they told me at around age 45 for me which is when my mom got breast cancer.

The other poster is dead wrong, genetics do indeed play a role in breast cancer. Some women do indeed get the oncogene from their mothers and put them at increased risk for cancer. I would doubt that at your young age you would have cancer BUT you do need to be extra careful and get tested on a regular basis. Talk to your doctor about what to do and how often to get a mammogram, or the new MRI method of detection.

It's rare, but it happens. And the fact that your mother had it when she was young and pre-menstrual increases your chances of getting it. But it's still unlikely. BUT if you're concerned, and you're getting these symptoms, I do strongly advise you to go see a doctor at once. If it is cancer, it can be caught and treated early, and if it's not, they'll set your mind at ease.

It's not nearly as common in people as young as 19 as it is in older people, but it's probably possible. I don't think itching or redness is a sign of cancer, though.

If you itch any part of your skin, it will turn red. I've never heard of itching being a sign of breast cancer, but in any case, you should probably see a doctor. 38 is quite a bit younger than the usual age of people diagnosed breast cancer that I know of, but 18/19 years old is even rarer. Still, your mother had it, and having a history of breast cancer in your family increases your chances of developing it.

You should ask your doctor or health teacher about breast examinations. You can learn to do these yourself (it's the process of examining your breasts for lumps with your hands) or get a physician to do it. Not every lump in necessarily cancer, and some breasts are naturally lumpy without being cancerous at all, but if you do find any lumps you can talk to your doctor about finding out whether or not it really is cancer.

Here's a link to the step-by-step process of examining your breasts yourself:

As you are worried about it and do not know your level of risk, I would suggest that your best bet is seeing a doctor about a breast exam and asking them about any concerns you have. Also, being active and healthy can help to reduce the risk of cancer.

Take care; I am very sorry you lost your mother.

In first place, cancer is certainly not a hereditary disease and don鈥檛 get that notion dwell in your mind. I am not a professional adviser, but I do remember attending a lecture series on this very topic in city hall by prominent surgeons in the field. None of them had given place to this possibility. As far that itching around ariola, and red spots are concerned, I think you better get yourself a thorough check-up revealing all these facts before a qualified surgeon who, in turn, shall give you proper advise....followed by concerned treatment, if necessary.
