What are the chances of having breast cancer if the doctor found an unknown lump at the breast area?

please tell me the chances are super low.

not every lump we find is a cancer.
every lump in the breast should be investigated using the method of 'triple assessment'
1. breast examination by a doctor
2. Fine needle aspiration and cytology (FNAC) of the lump
3. ultrasound (under 35 yo) or mammography (more than 35 yo)
not forgetting to assess the risk factors u had- family history, age, high fat diet, unopposed use or exposure to estrogen, etc...

the characteristics which may be suggestive of a cancerous lump are:
enlarging in size over a period of months
changes in the colour of the overlying skin
warm skin over the lump
the surface of the lump is irregular
painless discharge from the nipple
there is evidence of fixation to the skin or muscle (not mobile lump)
the are multiple lymph nodes found in the axilla (armpit)
bony tenderness especially over the back

however, It is not complete without FNAC and Ultrasound or mammography as confirmatory.

edit-
no doubt breast cancer is rare in young adults but it doesnt mean that it is not possible. there is no such thing as 100% in medicine.
interesting fact 1% of breast cancer bearers are males.

Best get every lump you discovered checked by your doctor, and if necessary, run further tests, if only for your own peace of mind.

Maybe I'm paranoid, I had mamogram (ouch!!) done last year because one breast felt lumpier than the other. And tomorrow, I'm scheduled to remove a sebaceous cyst from the same breast.

More & more women with no family history of breast cancer are getting it. So, better be safe than sorry,

Wild Armpit Hair: Like your sense of humour! I read that many cancerous lumps were first discovered by hubbies & boyfriends, before their doctors!!

I say 50-50% although the link below say 15% to 20% it is cancerous ... some lumps are just benign (my mom told me ... hehehe ... and not my boyfriend) ... some are malignant ... the thing is that you have to get a specialist (again it is the doctor and not your boyfriend) to make a thorough diagnosis ...

By the way, I was told that the chances of getting lumps are higher if you ever give birth ... due to the milk production that is not used up or something like that ...

Be positive though cuz nothing is definite until you get the specialist (not your boyfriend) opinions...

Low depending on your age. My doctor found a lump on one of my breast too. (mastalgia) and I'm scheduled for a mammogram and an ultradound this week. She said due to my age (20) It is very unlikely for me to have breast cancer. But you should get it checked out. theres always that onee person who does get it.

Good luck .

It depends on how long has it been there. Sometimes it just there during menstrual cycle. However, lump or cyst are sign that the body is haywired. Get a mammogram or 10 mts biopsy to confirm status (not painful).
Detoxifiying is crucial. Water, water, water and fruits!

pretty good. thats what happened with my mom and it turned out it was cancer. and this was after breast feeding four kids. if you didnt know this, the chances of you having breast cancer after breast feeding is supposed to be very low.

u should do further test to make sure the lump is cancer, most of the usual lump is nothing when been checked by mamogram, so consulted ur doctor..

(^-*)

medium not that low nor super low..depends on your age/gender

Low,depending if it does or does not run in your family. Even men can get this.

since when you have a boobs, easiest way to touch it all around in a circular movement

i m not an expert, consult doctor

tats boobs.. not cancer...
