Why Only Women Get Breast Cancer But Men Don't ?

this question is actually coming from my grand mother because she is kind of jealous to see that women suffer with this and men don't , so if anyone can provide me with a good answer then please do !

Tell your grand mother that men also get breast cancer and some other cancer which women does not get.

Please read my blog which I wrote on Yahoo-360 some time back, on this subject which I am appending and explain your grandmother. I have also given the link below for your information..-

Even though men do not have Breasts like women, they do have a small amount of breast tissue. In fact the Breasts of an adult man are similar to the breasts of a girl before puberty, and consist of a few ducts surrounded by breast and other tissue. In girls, this tissue grows and develops in response to female hormones, but in men, who do not secrete the same amounts of these hormones, this tissue does not develop.

However, because it is still breast tissue, men can develop breast cancer. In fact, men get the same types of breast cancers that women do, although cancers involving the milk producing and storing regions of the breast are very rare. Breast cancer in men is a very rare disease. This is possibly due to their smaller amount of breast tissue and the fact that men produce smaller amounts of hormones like estrogen that are known to affect breast cancers in women. Only a tiny fraction of breast cancers diagnosed - less than 1% - occur in men. And because it happens so infrequently, much is still unknown about male breast cancer. It is very rare for a man under age 35 to get breast cancer, but the likelihood of developing the disease increases with age. Family history in a close female relative and a history of radiation exposure of the chest can also increase the risk.

The clearest risk for developing breast cancer seems to be in men who have had an abnormal enlargement of their breasts in response to drug or hormone treatments, or even some infections and poisons. Individuals with a rare genetic disease called Klinefelters syndrome, are especially prone to develop breast cancer. Men with severe liver disease tend to have lower levels of male hormones, (androgens) and higher levels of female hormones (estrogens) putting them at an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

The major problem is that breast cancer in men is often diagnosed later than breast cancer in women. This may be because men are less likely to be suspicious of an abnormality in that area. In addition, their small amount of breast tissue is harder to feel and allowing tumors to spread more quickly to the surrounding tissues.

Men also have very similar symptoms as women have. Most male breast cancers are diagnosed when a man discovers a lump on his chest. However, unlike women, men tend to go to the doctor with more severe symptoms that often include bleeding from the nipple and abnormalities in the skin above the cancer.
The symptoms, diagnosis and treatment techniques for male breast cancers are similar to that of female (physical exams, mammograms, and biopsies) and the same four treatments that are used in treating breast cancer in women (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormones) are also used to treat the disease in men. So, it is very essential that the awareness is spread among men also.-

Men are only about two percent of all breast cancer cases, but breast cancer in men is often fatal because the symptoms are ignored.

Even though men do not have breasts like women, they do have a small amount of breast tissue. In fact, the "breasts" of an adult man are similar to the breasts of a girl before puberty, and consist of a few ducts surrounded by breast and other tissue. In girls, this tissue grows and develops in response to female hormones, but in men - who do not secrete the same amounts of these hormones - this tissue does not develop.

Why do you not hear about breast cancer in men as much as you hear about breast cancer in women?

Breast cancer in men is a very rare disease. This is possibly due to their smaller amount of breast tissue and the fact that men produce smaller amounts of hormones like estrogen that are known to affect breast cancers in women.

There are 1,400 cases of male breast cancer per year. In fact, only about 1 in 100 breast cancers affect men and only about 10 men in a million will develop breast cancer.

As most everyone has pointed out men do get breast cancer. (my grandfather had it) It's a lot more rare because, even thought there are a lot of different types a lot of woman end up getting cancer in the ducts that produce the milk. Woman who get pregnant but never end up caring the baby to term are even more likely to get cancer because the area that hold the milk are stimulated and start to work than suddenly cut off.

Plus woman normally have more mass on their chest which means a larger area with the potential of activating cancer cells. (Tell you grand mother not to be to disheartened over it, after all we don't get prostate cancer.)

Breast cancer isn't just a woman's disease. Men also have breast tissue that can undergo cancerous changes. While women are about 100 times more likely to get breast cancer, any man can develop breast cancer. Male breast cancer is most common between the ages of 60 and 70.

The prognosis for male breast cancer is the same as for breast cancer in women. In the past, male breast cancer was often diagnosed at a more advanced stage, which may have led people to believe it had a worse prognosis. Although male breast cancer and breast cancer in women are similar, important distinctions such as breast size and awareness affect early diagnosis and survival in cases of male breast cancer.

Cancer is a group of abnormal cells that grow more rapidly than do normal cells. Cancer cells also have the ability to invade and destroy normal tissues, either by growing directly into surrounding structures or after traveling to another part of your body through your bloodstream or lymphatic system. Microscopic cancer cells form small clusters that continue to grow, becoming more densely packed and hard.

In most cases it isn't clear what triggers abnormal cell growth in breast tissue in men. But doctors do know that about one in six cases of breast cancers in men are inherited, compared with about 5 percent to 10 percent of breast cancers in women. Defects in breast cancer gene 1 or 2 (BRCA 1 or BCRA 2) put you at greater risk of developing breast cancer. Other inherited genes also may increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Knowing your family history is important to determine your chance of inheriting an abnormal gene.

Most genetic mutations related to breast cancer aren't inherited, but instead develop during your lifetime. These acquired mutations may result from radiation exposure, such as receiving chest radiation therapy in childhood, or from other, as yet unknown, factors.

Hope this information was helpful.

It is possible for anyone, no matter if they are male or female, or at any age . . to develop breast cancer . .no one is totally immune. Children as young as six years old can have a form of childhood breast cancer . . it is rare . .but people should know that it can happen. Males, young or old can also develop breast cancer because they have a small amount of breast tissue . . any cell within the body can become cancerous. It's just rare . . so most people don't know about it.

I reget to tell you this but your grandmother was mistaken. Although it is rare men DO get breast cancer. Check out this link: http://www.revolutionhealth.com/conditio...

Male breast cancer is rare and makes up only about 1% of all breast cancers discovered each year. For this reason, many experts encourage men with breast cancer to talk to their doctors about clinical trials. These trials continue to look for better ways to treat male breast cancer.

It is possible for men to get breast cancer.

A conspiracy theory I have heard says that Soy products may help contribute to this...

I don't know if this will help or not...

Men can and do get breast cancer. It's less common in men as men have less breast tissue (by mass) than women.

However, if there's a family history of breast cancer , especially if the male carries one of the breast cancer genetic markers, then there is an increased risk of breast cancer.

men can also get breast cancer honey.......but the chances of then gettin it are probably 100 or so times less!!!!!

every year probably 450 men in the US die of breast cancer!!!

it really sucks thoh!

take care!
n give mah best wishes to ur grandma!

that's so not true. Plus men have a much more dismal prognosis than women because they have less breast tissue for the cancer to grow in, so it goes elsewhere metastasizing.

Men do! It's just uncommon. But it is stupid to say that only women suffer. You don't get prostate cancer do you? You don't have a prostate.

Men can get breast cancer.

Breasts are a functional part of women who bring new life into the world. It is a hazard all women must recognize but men also have the problem as cancer does not choose sides

Men get breast cancer also. They just don't get it as often as women do.

Men and woman both share this notorious cancer, but woman have a higher risk of getting it than men do.

Men have died from breast cancer too but it just seems that Women get it more. I believe this is due to hormonal reasons.

Men can get breast cancer but they are at a lower risk of it.

Men do get breast cancer, but are at a very low risk for it.

yep men can get breast cancer. true dat true dat

Men CAN and DO get breast cancer...just not as frequently seen as in women.
