What are the chances of a breast cancer recurrence? and survival rate? |
a close person i know has Invasive ductal carcinoma in situ with minimal/ inconclusive shes her2+ tumor is 1.5 cm. She's getting a second opinion from somwhere before she begins lumptectomy and radiation followed by chemotherapy. I would like to know how long can she live upto and the chances of a recurrence. There are lots of statistics out there, but I hate to try and go by that because everyone is different. There are so many factors that go into each case. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma last year. On the mammogram it appeared to be 1.5 cm, but by the time I had the tumor removed it was 2.5 cm. I am also her2+ and Er/Pr+. I chose to have a mastectomy, and I had node involvement so I also had chemotherapy and radiation. Because I was Her2/neu+ I had a year of Herceptin treatments. My last treatment is in two weeks. Herceptin was approved not that long ago to use in treatment for eary stage Her/2neu+ breast cancer. I would assume your friend will be having that part of her treatments. There are many treatments available to us and there are many many survivors. I'm glad to hear she's getting a second opinion, I think that's so important. I wish your friend the best. She can live till she's 100! It all depends on if the cancer has spread or not. They will be able to determine the chances it spread after her surgery. My tumor was 2.5 cm and thank god it didn't spread. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. Has she thought about a full Masectomey? It's hard I know - I refused but I still wonder if I should have done it. There is a fairly new test out there called OncoType DX. It's a company in California (the only one in the world) who actually take a sample of the tumor and can determine how likley it would return. The test is about $4,000 but I think insurance is pretty much covering it now. It had to enroll in a clincial trial to have it b/c at the time my insurance didn't. It did give me peice of mind because my score came back really low. About 7% and if I added Chemo it reduced it to about 2%. That's good for me!! If you want to go to the website to find out more about it, the company is called Genome Health. Good luck, I'll say a prayer. |
