How long will it take to find out if you have breast cancer or not? |
My mom is going in for a screening today to see if she has breast cancer or not cuz she found a lump the other day. How long will it take for the doctor's to notify her if she has it or not? Not sure what you mean by "screening." Typically after a lump is found they do a diagnostic mammogram/sonogram. This can resolve many suspicious lumps. The radiologist would know pretty much right away. If these 2 tests do not resolve the question, then they recommend (typically) a biopsy. This can take a week or 2 to get scheduled. Then the pathology report can take 2 weeks if it has to be sent out to another lab. It depends on how the hospital/facitlity is set up where your mother is going. I found out I had cancer the day that I had my mammogram. My hospital had a Breast Health center, and once they had mammogram pictures of my lump , there was someone immediately available for an ultrasound, and ultimately a biopsy. I will be praying that the lump is benign, remember most lumps are not cancerous! http://info.means.it |
