After having breast surery from breast cancer can it spread into the side of your breast?

my mother had right breast surery done on the right side now she is having the same pain on the left side, after having breast cancer surery will it spread into the other side.

Sweetheart, I understand exactly what your mother is going through. I had a mastectomy in 2007, then in Nov of 2008 I not only had a second mastectomy, but the Oncologist had to redo my first one because my surgeon was not a specially trained Dr to mastectomies and he left in a huge amount of diseased tissue. When he removed the excess tissue, he found another tumor. However, it doesn't mean your mother's cancer or mine spread to the other side. It means it happened to found at different times. It was there before. we didn't know it at the time. Does you mom have a qualified surgeon? I only ask because of what happened to me and I don't want it to happen to any other women. I joined a support group and speak out against this sort of thing and warn women everywhere, make sure their surgeons are specailly trained to mastectomies or you could end up with additional surgery. My Dr told me there was so much residual tissue left, it was like doing a double mastectomy and he felt bad. But you know what the most important thing is? It doesn't matter to me that I have no breast, I have life now. Now I can enjoy my grandchildren and my children for a long time to come. There's always reconstructive surgery or prosthetics. I chose prosthetics. No more surgery for me if I can help it. Tell you mother you are both in my prayers. I feel she will do great. She needs you to help her out a lot now and I know you know that. ADD By the way, I am really getting sick of people saying there is no pain associated with breast cancer. Yeah I know, my Dr told me the same thing, but I had terrible pain that's what made me check. So did my sister and 2 nieces. Just because the norm is no pain for most, doesn't men that you won't have pain. Everyone is different and I wish people would stop saying that. Please.

This is possible,which is why follow up appointments with your oncologist are so important after cancer treatment.

My mother had a lumpectomy on one side, followed by a lumpectomy on the other side, followed by a mastectomy on the 2nd side over several years during my adolescence. She then had remission for many years before developing a tumor in the shoulder near the mastectomy site which went undiagnosed for some time. Further spread of this cancer eventually killed her.

My sister and I are both in remission after breast cancer (15 years ago for sister, 5 years abo for me).

I am suprised you mention pain, as pain is rarely associated with breast cancer.

It could be a new tumor that had begun to grow on that side, but I am sure the doctors would have done tests to see that was not the case otherwise they would have taken care of it at the time of the surgery on the right breast.

It could just be pain from having it done, but I would have her get a check up on it just in case.

Sorry about mom, at least the surgery is not too bad physically, could be psychologically.

Yes it can. My wife is a survivor. She had breast cancer. That is the reason your mom , has got to get check every six month. For the first year or so. Then after that it is once a year. But she has got to eat well. Best of all you be there for her. Talk to her and give her lots of love.

while doing first breast surgery doctors must have checked the other one also. so less chances. spread is possible if she had not gone for check ups. during check up we examine any spread to other parts through blood stream. if doubted she must have mammogram and opinion from oncologist

Unfortunately once the patient has had cancer it could spread anywhere.
Hope she has had it checked out?

If you've had cancer anywhere it can spread anywhere, even if the surgeons think they have removed all of it.

Your mother should see her doctor ASAP.
