Breast reduction for a 16 year old with a 36 DD and extremely low self-esteme, good or bad idea?

her friends make fun of her and she jokes around about the size of her breasts with them but inside it really hurts her. When she tries to talk to her friends about it they say that they aren't that bad and that breast reduction is too drastic but they are part of her problem with all of the jokes they make. Also, every shopping trip ends up in tears because she cannot find a well fitting bathing suit or cute top because her chest is so big . Is a breast reduction really too drastic for a 16 year old?

but what if its not a big reduction. just from a DD to a big C or small D?

i just celebrated my one-year anniversary of having my reduction! i was 19 then and a lot of people told me I was too young. i brushed the idea of surgery off because of this. and then, at my annual women's wellness exam, my gyno asked me if my chest caused me any back pain or other problems and i told her yes, but i was skeptical about my age. the next place i found myself was in my plastic surgeon's office at georgetown university hospital awaiting a consultation. my mom went with me as she thought i wasn't even eligible for the surgery. he sure enough told me that i was more than the perfect candidate for surgery, there had been so many advances in breast reduction mammoplasty, and age was not as big of a concern as it used to be. and with other concerns, breastfeeding and scarring are close to not even being issues anymore.

all in all, it is possible to have surgery at her age. it is her decision. i couldn't be happier. i went through the same pain that she is going through. ever since i was 13, i have been the girl known for her boobs. i would laugh off the jokes and join in with the laughter, but it did hurt because there was nothing i could do. i had back problems that i had also brushed off as just "growing pains" or just posture problems. i had grooves in my shoulders. i had custom-fitted bras made for me. i played sports wearing 3 sport bras. i tried my hardest to live a normal life doing all the stuff that i loved to do. it was extremely hard and it was miserable. now, i walk with my head held high. and don't go in to an overall defense mode when men talk to me. i am comfortable with my body and to all of the people saying, "oh, just lose weight or see a psychiatrist." it doesn't work for most people and doctors/surgeons will prove it to you.

also, recovery time was a week for me. i did the surgery over spring break and was back in school the following tuesday. i won't say it was painless, but it was well worth it. and scars are not that big of an issue. they make so many products now to put on your scars to minimize the appearance.

Overall, I would say no. If the boobs are too big and cause health problems, (back pain, etc) then go for it, i know a couple of friends who recently had it done and they are so much happier!

Bad Idea!

My sister got one when she was in your exact situation and a few years ago she got implats(sp) because she wasn't happy!

no, its not too drastic at all. if this is something that affects self-esteem, then it should be treated.

first, i would try to talk to a psychologist about the problem to see if they could help me accept my body. but if it really is that difficult, surgery may well in fact be an option.

dont get make too drastic of a change though. its a big adjustment, and quite frankly,yr olds can be idiots. i know, b.c im 16 too. a lot of them will make comments, but they just need to be ignored.

hope this helps!!

Is she overweight? If so go on a diet an exercise. I know a girl that went from DD to a C when she dieted and got in shape . If she is already height, weight proportionate than maybe surgery is the only alternative.

It should not be for self esteem, but for back pain issues.

She should at least look into it.

Plenty of girls her age and younger get breast reductions. The only thing holding PS's back is that girls are not done growing yet, so they may need ANOTHER reduction in the future.
