Breastfeeding and solids? |
When starting your baby on solids, what order do you do it in? Nurse first, follow up with solids...solids then nurse...solids at a complete different time from nursing? At what point after introducing solids did your baby stop nursing as frequently? Did they drop an entire feed or just nurse for shorter periods? Just trying to figure out what to expect! i just started my son on rice cereal last weekend. I definitely nursed first, since it's the most important form of nutrition in the first year of life. Then I would offer some solids. I usually nursed first so my daughter wasn't totally starving, and then gave some rice cereal either 30-60 minutes later and then nursed again when she was hungry. I think after I started giving her solids 2-3 times a day she nursed a little less but not that much. My baby started solids 2 weeks ago. I basically nurse on one side, give him his food, then nurse on the other side. I don't want him to become too full with one thing so that he doesn't take the other. He should be having the same quantity of milk, just at less frequent intervals. Instead of nursing every 3 hours, now I'm nursing every 4-5 hours. He gets cereal in the morning and evening, with pureed veggies at lunch. Milk with all meals, plus in between. Nurse first, especially when they're less than a year old. You might be surprised how little solid food they eat at first, and even for quite a while. Some kids take right to it and eat anything. Others pick at their food and graze throughout the day. And of course, they can't even feed themselves for a few more months. If your baby really takes to solids, s/he may indeed cut out a breast feeding or two. They do start to nurse for shorter periods of time as they get older because 1) they become more efficient nursers and 2) your breast milk becomes more concentrated so they get what they need in their shorter attention span. And of course every baby is different, but hopefully posting here willl give you some ideas of what might happen with yours. Good luck! |
