Breastfeeding lies?

My husband's friend at work insists that we will need to buy formula to supplement the breastfeeding routine, because "Women's breasts can't produce enough milk to feed the baby well."

Is he just full of sh*t and doesn't know the mechanics of breasts, or what? Someone please give me an explanation of how milk production works in a woman.

I haven't given birth yet, i'm just reading up.

I breastfed all four of my children and NEVER even once gave them formula. A woman produces milk for the baby on supply and demand. As the baby requires more milk you will produce more and when the baby drinks less you will produce less.

that person is full of it, many many many babies live of only breastmilk
Breastfeeding is a supply and demand process. Therefore, the more often you nurse, the more milk you produce!
this has lots of info http://babies.sutterhealth.org/breastfee...

or just google : how breast milk production works
you will get all the info you could ever want

number6 hit it right on the nail. I've breastfed all four of my babies too, and none of them were ever starving, all were chubby lil guys.
To go by your hubbys co workers mentality means that really no mammal should survive, after all cats dont give kittens formula, and they thrive quite well.

the other posters are 100% correct breastfeeding is a supply and demand type of thing. the more the baby nurses or you pump the more milk you make. the less the baby nurses or less you pump the less milk you make. mother nature is a wonderful thing. i breastfed my daughter until she was 7 months old (she self weened) and never had a problem with not having enough milk for her.

the only "lie" i have ever encountered with BF is that ppl make you think it is a breeze. it wasnt for me and my daughter it took some time to get the hang of it, but i am glad we stuck it out and made it work

the possibility of you not producing enough milk is slim to none, though it could happen. its all about supply and demand, so if all you give is breast milk, your body will make enough. its non-stop at first, before your milk comes in and then the baby goes through days of 'cluster feeding' but after a few weeks it gets better

OK I AM NO DOCTOR HOWEVER,IVE HRARD OF SOME CASES WHERE THIS WAS TRUE THE MOM WAS NOT GIVING ENOUGH MILK FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER IN THE CASE THAT IAM TALHING ABOUT WELL THINGS JUST BECAME TO PAIN FULL FOR THE LADY SO SHE SWITCHED HOWEVER I DONOT DO NOT SUGGEST THIS ,,,,,,BREAST MILK IS THE ONE THING THAT HAS ALLWAYS SEEMED TO WORK WHEN FEEDING A NEW BORN I HAVE SEEN NEWBORNS TAKE A DAY BEFORE THEY FEED THEN AGAIN I HAVE HEARD OF NEWBORN THAT HAVE NEVER GOTTON USE TO PLAS,,,NIPPLESIN OTHERWORDS USE WHAT GOD GAVE YOU YOU WILL FIND THAT THEY WORK JUST AS WELL IF NOT EVEN BETTER THEN ANYTHING ELSE THATS AROUND ALSO IT GIVES YOU THAT SPECAIL TIME WITH THE LITTLE ONE NOW IS THAT NOT WORTH IT AND DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE BUT YOUR DOCTOR SHE OR HE WILL HAVE EVERY THING THAT YOU SHALL NEED AT THE RIGHT TIME P,S. YOU MAY NEED A PUMP CHECK INTO THAT
