Breastfeeding issues!?

when i am feeding my son he has trouble latching on, so he latches on for like 2 mins and then lets go, when he lets go milk just sprays out, like everywhere, and it is so bad that he can't latch back on until i can get it under control, it happens every 2 mins when i a feeding, any ideas or suggestions to help? anythign would be great, thanks!

You have an overactive letdown! Think of it like trying to drink from a fire hydrant--no wonder that baby pulls away!

I had the same problem with my second baby. The easiest way to fix it is to use only one breast per feed. So, instead of switching, use only one side (even if baby is nursing like 30 minutes.) Some mother's letdown is so intense that they do block feeding, where they use only one side for several feeds and then switch (trying to keep the amount that you nurse from both sides the same in a 24 hour period.)

You can also try nursing 'uphill'. For instance, you lying down on your back, and baby lying on top of you. See the link for more details and hints.

Try expressing some milk before he latches on. Sounds like you might have a strong let down.

Trying using a nipple shield. But only just to get the latch on in the beginning until your milk flow has settled. Then remove the nipple shield and try again. I am sure he would have no problems after. Good luck!

It sounds like overactive letdown. I had the same problem. I nurse on one side for two feedings (when they are within 4 hours of each other ) it fixed itself in 3 days, I used the nursing positions in this link during that time.

I think your let down reflex is too strong for your child. I've seen nipple shields at Target that are supposed to weaken the flow of milk entering your child's mouth.

I don't think it is an issue of latching. I think that either your letdown is to strong or you have an over supply of milk... Either way your baby has no choice but to let go because he can't handle the amount of milk coming out. Try expressing some milk before feeding him, that should help. Best of Luck to you. :)

it the pump and pour in a bottle

you might try nursing him when lying down on your side, it seems to help the flow a little bit. I had crazy oversupply when I started nursing, but it evened out. I almost wish it hadn't, I used to have a freezer full of extra milk and now when I pump I can barley get an ounce. If you want a back up supply now is a great time to make use of that extra milk!! It lasts 4-6 months in the freezer! Good Luck.
