Has anyone ever fallen pregnant whilst EXCLUSIVELY breastfeeding their baby during the 1st six months? |
By exclusivley, I mean at no point from birth - 6 months was your baby given any formula, solids, water or juice of any kind. YES YES YES!!! It wasn't me, but my best friend did. She exclusively breastfed her prem baby girl, and within 6 weeks was pregnant again, depsite also using the 'pull out' method. I became pregnant while nursing but my baby was older but with my first 2 children my period came back within 3 months while exclusively nursing which meant I was ovulating and definitely could have gotten pregnant. Every woman is different, some don't get their cycle back for months after they stop nursing but you never know when that egg is going to drop. I don't consider it the most effective form of birth control but for SOME people it works. I can't imagine it statistically being more reliable then the pill when properly taken. When I was breastfeeding I was told that as long as you have exclusively breastfed and your periods haven't come back then for the first 6 months you have only a 2% chance of gettig pregnant, more or less the same chance as on the pill. But no way would I risk that, and my GP and midwife both advised me to go on the mini-pill which I did - I saw it as double protection. Well this is what my doctor said- It is very difficult (not impossible) to get pregnant if you breath feed or pump every six hours or so. If you go more than that then you make it much easier to get pregnant while exclusively breast feeding. My doctor was exclusively breast feeding and she got pregnant two or three nights after her son sleep through the night when he was about 5 months old. She said that she should have been more careful, but she thought at the time that just once wouldn't hurt. She had wanted another baby, just not one that quickly. Thats rubbish,I know lots of women who have fallen pregnant while exclusively breastfeeding. also no pacifiers. the baby has to suckle on you all the time. its less than a 2% chance if you do it properly, Im sure tons of women THINK they are doing it right but then give their kid a pacifier (or something) and get pregnant again I became pregnant while exclusivley breastfeeding, and using the "pull-out" method with my hubby. your question has been well analysed. |
